iEXPO

What is iExpo?

The purpose of Hesperia Unified School District’s Imagination Exposition (iExpo) is to inspire students to become innovators and leaders in the school and community. Students take part in one or more challenges across a range of subjects including Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Robotics, Improv, and Visual Arts. Each Challenge is open-ended and enables students to be creative and use their imaginations to complete.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Event Information:

CHALLENGES

All challenges are undertaken by teams of 2-3 students. All teams must complete the Instant Challenge and can participate in a maximum of 2 additional challenges.

Main Challenge

Teams to design and build the tallest tower possible using only popsicle sticks and Elmer's glue and the tower must be able to withstand different degrees of simulated earthquakes.

Coding

Kindergarten–3rd Grade: Students will produce a story using Scratch or Scratch Jr. iPad/Android app that includes a background, sound, and animation with a key message and theme.

4th–6th Grade: Students will design a game that teaches the user something using Scratch that includes a background, at least 2 sprites (characters), and keeps score for the player.

Improvisation

Students will act as a leader in the world of science, technology, engineering, arts, or mathematics and present a monologue or dialogue to an audience, while dressed as their selected leader.

Speech and Debate

2nd–3rd Grade: Students will present on a simple, relatable topic such as “My Favorite Animal,” “Why Recycling is Important,” or “If I Were Principal for a Day.”

4th–6th Grades: Students will present on topics that encourage critical thinking and opinion, like “The Benefits of Team Sports,” “Why Books are Better than Movies,” or “Should School Start Later?”

Art

Students will create a large colored drawing that visually represents the theme of "Surviving with STEAM" Artwork should be a minimum of 24”x36" and will be put on display at the event for viewing by judges and attendees.

Robotics

Battlebots: Students will use existing VEX competition fields and VEX parts to construct a robot that can collect and move randomly placed cubes to their score zone. Teams with the highest score, wins.

Racebots: Students will design a wireless robot within specific dimensions that can travel through all turns and hurdles of a designed track. The robot that will complete the track in the least amount of time will be the winner.
